Suffolk County Police say the 16-year-old was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Grant Smith Road near the intersection of Route 112 in Coram when he was observed crossing the double yellow line on Wednesday, Nov. 13 around 11 p.m.
The officer initiated a traffic stop, but the teen allegedly sped away in the vehicle, making several turns through a residential neighborhood, police say.
The teen then attempted to ram a police vehicle on Seymour Lane in Coram around 11:15 p.m., officers say.
The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, slid off the roadway after making several more turns and struck a police cruiser at the intersection of Bellport Avenue and Horseblock Road in Medford around 11:20 p.m., police say.
One of the passengers in the vehicle, identified as Sean Ryerson, 19, of Shirley, was ticketed for unlawful possession of marijuana. The other passenger, a 17-year-old male, was released to a family member at the scene.
No injuries were reported, police say.
The driver of the Hyundai faces the following charges:
- Driving while ability impaired by drugs
- Fourth-degree criminal mischief
- Unlawful fleeing
- Reckless endangerment
The teen was released to a family member and is scheduled to be arraigned at Family Court in Central Islip.
